Construction

The first period, 1961/1962-1964/1965 began with the official start of construction August 17, 1961 with Sukarno main ceremony in the first pile of concrete. A total of 284 piles have been used to block the foundation. Another 360 piles were driven to the base to the museum, the work was completed in March 1962. The walls of the museum of the base was completed in October. The construction of the obelisk began and ended in August 1963. Work on the second stage, from 1966 to 1968 has been delayed for lack of funds and the day after the attempted coup of September 30 Movement. In the final phase, from 1969-1976, historical dioramas for the museum were added. The problems continued after construction has been completed and work was needed to solve problems with a leak in the museum. The memorial was officially opened to the public on July 12, 1975. The site location is known as Merdeka Square.
